Liberal member says new stadium should be built near Melbourne airport
A Liberal member says Melbourne should build a new stadium out west, not in the city.
A proposal to demolish Etihad Stadium and build a new ground across the tracks from the MCG was made public on Tuesday night.
But Bernie Finn, member for the Western Metropolitan region, told Neil Mitchell any new stadium should be built ‘somewhere between the airport and Sunbury’.
He said building a rail link to the ground – and thereby to the airport as well – would kill two birds with one stone.
‘People from interstate can fly in, go to the footy, and fly out again,’ he said.
Mr Finn rejected the idea that his proposed site is too far away.
‘The airport’s only about 20-25 minutes out of town,’ he said.
