Liberal senator’s stunning salary claim on Kenyan television

A Liberal senator has come under attack after she said her $200,000 salary was “not a lot” of money.

South Australian senator Lucy Gichuhi made the comment on Kenyan television.

The average yearly wage in Kenya is $1121 (Australian).

“I find that extraordinary,” Neil Mitchell said.

Senator Derryn Hinch admits he was “gobsmacked” by Ms Gichuhi’s claim.

“We are very well paid, very well looked after,” he said.

“It was a very naïve thing to say.”
