Lleyton Hewitt held to ‘different standard’ than Nick Kyrgios, Bernard Tomic, says Tom Elliott

Jacqui Felgate

Tom Elliott says the lack of reaction to Lleyton Hewitt’s umpire abuse in his final Australian Open match shows we’re unfair on Nick Kyrgios and Bernard Tomic.

The 3AW Drive host said he liked Hewitt and admired what he’d achieved during his tennis career, but wasn’t a fan of hearing the former world No.1 call an umpire a ‘freaking idiot’ at one point during the match.

He said there would have been outrage if it was anybody other than Hewitt.

‘Let’s say (Thanasi) Kokkinakis, or Kyrgios, or Tomic had accused an umpire of being a ‘freaking idiot’ ? the Herald Sun today would have had ‘Bad Boys Of Australian Tennis’ emblazoned across the front page,’ the 3AW Drive host said.

‘I think we treat Lleyton Hewitt a little bit differently to those young players in Australia and it’s wrong.

‘The standard should be the same for everybody.’
