Bass Coast Shire will become the first council in Australia to mandate equal prizemoney to be paid to male and female competitors using council sporting facilities.

The initiative will commence at next month’s Motocross Open at Wonthaggi.

“At the end of the day, we are about improving the quality of life for our community and gender equality is a big part of that,” Bass Coast Shire CEO Ali Wastie told Neil Mitchell.

Neil Mitchell said he supported equality, but questioned the commercial reality of the initiative.
