Tom Elliott has heard Campaspe Shire Council will overstep its jurisdiction on Tuesday night.

The Northern Victorian Council will discuss a motion to publicly support and advocate for marriage equality irrespective of sex or gender identity – an area of law that is governed by Federal Parliament.

Mayor Leigh Wilson conceded that motions on marriage are a waste of the Council’s limited resources.

‘Our ratepayers don’t want us to be in this sphere.’

By Cr Wilson said that the average Australian feels forced to turn to the most approachable level of government on issues they are passionate about.

‘They’re reaching out to local government because they’re so frustrated (by) their elected representation at a State and Federal level,’ Cr Wilson said.
