Councils are too often becoming a “bureaucratic basket case”, according to Shane McInnes.

Rather than dealing with global issues and other agenda items out of their control, they are now being urged to focus on more local problems affect the day-to-day lives of their residents.

“Local councils often resemble a bureaucratic basket case more suited to the TV show Utopia than in fact being an asset to rate-paying residents,” Shane said on 3AW Afternoons.

Council Watch Vice President Dean Hurlston says councils are now facing an “existential identity crisis” as they try and grapple with their role in shaping society.

“What we hear consistency from tens of thousands of Victorians that they’re sick and tired trying to solve all the global problems and council inserting themselves in issues that aren’t in their remit,” he told 3AW.
