Looming strike threatens to exacerbate airport problems
Baggage handlers at Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane airports are taking the first steps towards industrial action, in a move that will exacerbate problems at already chaotic airports.
Baggage handlers from Emirates-owned Dnata will today apply to the Fair Work Commission for a vote on strike action.
The strike could mean baggage handling problems for up to 20 airlines including Qantas, Singapore Airlines and Etihad.
Federal secretary of the Flight Attendants Association of Australia, Teri O’Toole, says airlines are cutting flights regularly.
“Fuel prices are high, so they’re cancelling a third of the flights. They’re going to consolidate flights to make sure they’re all full,” she told Ross and Russel.
And because of known baggage problems, crew are struggling to fit carry on onto planes.
“No one wants to check their bags in so every flight crew are trying to find stowage for all the new baggage,” she said.
