Lord Mayor Sally Capp has hit back at claims bike lanes are having a negative impact on Melbourne’s CBD.

She says they are not to blame for congestion in the city.

Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry chief executive Paul Guerra has called for some to be removed.

“I don’t think the bike lanes, themselves, cause the gridlock,” she said.

“There are lots of factors.

“In fact, pre-COVID you’ll remember lots of discussions about congestion in the city, as well.

“The number one reason is through traffic – about 43 per cent of cars on the road are actually travelling through the city and we are focused on measures to address that, as much as addressing any other causes of congestion around the city.”
