Lord Mayor Robert Doyle says White Night could soon be Melbourne’s biggest event.

Mr Doyle told Neil Mitchell the event, held on Saturday night, was already bigger than the Melbourne Cup and Formula 1 Grand Prix.

An estimated 580,000 people flocked to the CBD for this year’s event.

‘I could seriously see it becoming our biggest event ? bigger than the Australian Open,’ Mr Doyle said on 3AW Mornings.

‘Australian Open is a bit over 700,000 (people).

‘If you think this has only been going now for four years and we get nearly 600,000 to this night?’

Mr Doyle said there was still plenty of improvement left in White Night, which only furthered his thinking that it could soon be Melbourne’s biggest event.
