WORD ON THE STREET

The Pier to Pub swim and Mountain to Surf run this weekend have been called off.

Both events will run as virtual events which can be completed anywhere around the world.

In a statement, race director John Takae said the “difficult” decision was made due to health and safety concerns and the potential impact holding the event may have on the community.

Mike Napolitano, from the Lorne Surf Club, said COVID-19 numbers in the area are “spiking”.

“The idea of welcoming, as we do every year, 20,000 or 25,000 people into the township of Lorne, it’s not something that the surf club wants to be doing this year with the town already under immense pressure,” he told Heidi Murphy, filling in for Tom Elliott.
