The blaze started in an unoccupied home on McDonald Drive in Winchelsea at about midnight.

The property was unoccupied, but the fire quickly spread to a neighbouring property, causing significant damage to both homes.

Four people from the neighbouring property were lucky to escape without injury, however a woman from another home in the street suffered smoke inhalation while trying to assist at the scene.

The fire is being treated as suspicious.

A crime scene has been established and an arson chemist will attend the scene today.
