King Charles III has unveiled his first official portrait at Buckingham Palace, the first look since his coronation last May.

There have been mixed reactions to the portrait painted by British artist Jonathan Yeo, but Melbourne University associate professor Robert Nelson says it is an abstract painting made for a contemporary world.

“It’s a scramble to make a picture look relevant, to make it look modern of our time, but still represent this institution of the King, the monarch,” he told Ross and Mark Allen, filling in for Russ..

He says the portrait is not just a splash of red, but rather an amalgamation of colours, stretching “from the magenta through to the orange”.
