Lygon St closed: Closed supermarket goes up in flames
An abandoned supermarket in Brunswick East has been destroyed in an early morning fire.
The fire, on Lygon Street south of Albion Street, was called in about 3.30am.
MFB crews arrived to find the supermarket fully ablaze.
The fire was so ferocious that firefighters couldn’t immediately perform checks to determine if anyone was inside.
Thankfully, no-one is believed to have been trapped or injured but the damage is extensive, with most of the ceiling collapsed.
One lane of Lygon Street remains closed in both directions to traffic. Trams are running as normal.
Sounds like worst case scenario will see Lygon St closed in both directions between Albion St and Blythe St East Brunswick until 10am following this fire. #victraffic https://t.co/zmHmNs1q5i
