Mad Max awards haul in LA
Rooney Mara had glowing words for her Carol co-star Cate Blanchett as she accepted her best lead actress gong at the International AACTA awards in Hollywood at the weekend.
Mara described Blanchett, who won the best actress award, as ‘bewitching’ and someone she’d admired for years.
Leonardo Di Caprio was named best lead actor and Mad Max: Fury Road took home best film.
George Miller accepted his best director gold statue from his film-making mate Philip Noyce. The pair chatted on stage at LA’s historic Avalon theatre for several minutes about the early days – and reminisced about having met at a workshop at university 45 years ago.
Bridge of Spies star Mark Rylance was named best supporting actor while best screenplay was won by Tom McCarthy and Josh Singer for Spotlight.
The AACTA International Awards, the Australian version of the Oscars, were hosted by Rachel Griffiths and Daniel MacPherson.
Other attendees included Tim Campbell, Radha Mitchell, Abbie Cornish, Joel Edgerton, Michael Caton, Sean and Jack Thompson.
