The Monash Freeway ‘carpark’ is on the agenda of the Federal Government’s new Minister for Cities.

And with Victoria leading the country in population growth, Minister Jamie Briggs flagged Melbourne’s major road projects in his sights.

‘Firstly we are still committed to the East-West Link proposal,’ he said on 3AW Mornings.

‘We are still disappointed the Victorian Government took the action it did.

‘So we retained $3 billion set aside in the contingency reserves in the federal budget, with the hope the government will come to the conclusion it needs to get into that project.’

The state’s population grew by nearly $100,000 from January to March, the first time Victoria’s growth outstripped the other states in 130 years.

The government is also ‘very interested’ in the Western Distributor project and upgrading the M1.

‘The other road I should mention and I think we need to put more attention on is the Monash, which is a carpark at best most days,’ he said.
