There’s been a hike in taxi driver applications after the scrapping of the ‘local knowledge’ test for would-be drivers.

The state government scrapped the test in August after unveiling plans to legalise ride-sharing services such as Uber.

Since then, 5045 people have applied to become cabbies.

Nearly 6000 people applied in all of 2015.

13CABS has hired more drivers in the past two months than it had in the past two years.

Simon Purssey from 13CABS said it was a positive.

‘I think it’s a great thing for Melbourne to have more cars and more drivers on the street,’ he told Neil Mitchell.
