Man arrested after random alleged CBD assaults

An elderly tourist has been the victim of an alleged coward punch in the middle of the CBD this afternoon.

Wayne, who witnessed the unprovoked assault, told 3AW Drive he was returning from lunch just after 1:30pm when he witnessed a man set upon the elderly man.

“I ended up leaving after an hour and 20 minutes … I stuck it out [waiting for the police] with a couple of others, and then at one point the victim left, and he didn’t know what was happening,” he said.

A police spokesperson revealed in a statement a man has been arrested following a series of random assaults along Collins Street.

“Police have received reports of five separate incidents of an unknown male approaching people and punching them in the Collins Street area,” they said.
