Residents of a low cost housing complex in Ballarat are shocked after a man with cerebral palsy was charged with the attempted murder of a five-year-old girl.

Ty Ranger, 23, spent his second night in custody following the shocking incident at the outer Ballarat suburb of Mitchell Park on Sunday afternoon.

He faces a string of charges including attempted murder, child stealing and assault after his five-year-old neighbour, Madison, was found in a critical condition with stab wounds.

As Madison’s condition improves in hospital, her mother took to social media to say she couldn’t understand why anyone would hurt her little girl.

Other neighbours were dumbfounded – saying Ty Ranger is largely wheelchair bound with cerebral palsy and struggles to hold onto his phone or smoke a cigarette

The matter will return to court in February.
