Man charged over online rental scams after more than a decade of evading police

An alleged scammer has been caught after more than a decade hiding from police.

The man, a 38-year-old who was wanted on several warrants since 2011, was arrested on March 31 at a Caulfield address.

He’s been charged with several counts of obtaining property by deception and obtaining a financial advantage by deception, relating to eight incidents of frauds committed in Victoria between 2011 and 2022.

Police allege the man contacted people online who were seeking rental properties, and asked them to pay rent and bond payments before ceasing contact.

He’s been remanded and will face Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on April 20.
