UPDATE: It’s now believed the man who drowned at Woolamai Beach on Sunday was in fact swimming between the flags before being swept out to sea.

The man was seen in difficulty shortly before 5pm yesterday but rescue attempts to reach him where unsuccessful.

He was found, already dead, about 20 minutes later.

Investigations have indicated the man had entered the water between the flags, however he quickly drifted outside the flags, where he got into trouble in a rip current.

It’s the second fatality at the treacherous stretch of water in the space of a week.

Indian student Hemant Govekar disappeared at Woolamai while swimming on Christmas Day.

Human remains were found a day later.

Paul said there is universal signage at the beach to try to, “combat the language barrier”.
