Man fighting for life after falling from carpark while evading police

Police are confident they did nothing wrong as investigations continue into an early morning incident which saw a man fall seven storeys from a multi-level carpark in the CBD.

The fall was loud enough to wake residents in a high-rise across the road.

The man – yet to be identified – is fighting for life in a critical condition in The Alfred hospital.

Security initially raised the alarm around 3am on Friday after seeing the man acting suspiciously in the carpark of the residential tower near Crown Casino on Southbank.

Police covered both exits – and weren’t actively chasing him – when he climbed outside and fell seven storeys onto an awning.

Inspector Trevor Cornwill told Neil Mitchell the homicide squad was investigating, as well as the professional standards command.

He says it’s not yet clear why the man was in the car park in the first place.
