Man arrested over alleged plane terror plot released without charge

One of the four men arrested in a major counter-terrorism operation in Sydney last weekend has been released.

The man, 50, was released from custody without charge last night, federal police have confirmed.

“Three men remain in detention under ‘specified time’ provisions outlined in Section 23DD of the Crimes Act 1914 (Cth),” the AFP said in a statement this morning.

“This investigation remains ongoing, and further information will be provided at an appropriate time.”

The four men were arrested regarding an investigation into allegations of a plot to commit a terrorist attack using an improvised device on a plane.

Police have spent days raiding homes across several Sydney suburbs in search of more evidence.

The allegations prompted a crackdown on airport security, announced by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.
