A young man has been hailed a hero after diving into the Yarra river to save a woman last night.

Police say the young woman, thought to be aged in her 20s, either jumped or fell into the water from the King Street Bridge in Southbank about 8.30pm.

A man, 21, quickly went to her aid.

He took the plunge himself, found the woman and hauled her to the riverbank.

The woman was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital for assessment.

Her rescuer was uninjured.
