A gunman is on the run after a 21-year-old man was shot dead in a “quiet suburban street” in Wollert this morning.

Police have described the shooting as a deliberate targeted attack following an altercation in a laneway, which is located directly across from a childcare centre.

“This all happened around 9 o’clock this morning, and it was a execution style hit,” Amber Jonson, Nine news reporter, said on 3AW.

Police are now looking into whether a burnt out car found shortly after in Reservoir is linked to the crime.

Criminal Psychologist, Tim Watson-Munro, likened the state of Victoria’s gang crime to Chicago in the United States.

He urged the government and Victoria Police to do more to control the “escalating” crime scene.

“This in itself is very different from how it was decades ago, people didn’t touch family and you didn’t do this stuff in broad daylight,” he said on 3AW.
