Man under police guard after EastLink tunnel smash

A man is under police guard in hospital following a two car crash in one of the tunnels on EastLink.

One of the vehicles overturned in the two car crash in the Melba Tunnel inbound just before 8pm last night.

Police cordoned off the tunnel and all inbound was traffic diverted as they searched for the driver of one of the vehicles — a stolen Mazda sedan — who had fled the scene on foot.

A 28-year-old Box Hill man was found nearby.

He remains under police guard in hospital being treated for injuries sustained in the crash.

The two occupants of the other car —  a Honda hatchback — were not injured.
