A cruise ship passenger has been winched by the Ambulance Helicopter and taken to hospital after suffering a stroke.

The man, aged in his 70s, fell into a critical condition shortly after the ship departed from Melbourne bound for Hobart last night.

The rescue happened off Mount Martha just after midnight.

The man was taken to the Alfred Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
