Matthew Lloyd and Dwayne Russell address the scandal surrounding Garry Lyon and Billy Brownless
3AW host Dwayne Russell and Matthew Lloyd have addressed the scandal involving Garry Lyon and Billy Brownless.
Russell, who played with Brownless at Geelong and was master of ceremonies at his wedding, said it would be ‘hypocritical’ for him to not comment on the story which has rocked the AFL.
He’s known Brownless for 30 years.
‘It sounds like a pathetic clich?, but Billy is the nicest guy I have met,’ the Sports Today host said on Monday.
‘He’s not just the nicest – he’s the friendliest, most genuine, kind-hearted, honest, happy, carefree, personable great company guy to hang with.
‘I’ve exchanged a few text messages with him these past two days but I’ve got no idea what’s happened, other than what I’ve read.
‘I do care, obviously, but I’m keeping my nose out of it.’
Matthew Lloyd, meanwhile, has worked closely with both Lyon and Brownless while filling roles on Footy Classified and Sunday Footy Show on Channel 9.
He said he was shattered by the news.
‘The word I’d use for Bill is genuine,’ Lloyd said.
‘There’s a lot of egos in this industry, but he’s one of the most real, down to earth and genuine people I’ve ever met.
‘He’s a real team player.’
Lloyd said Lyon had been a major influence on him since joining the media and said he hoped he was getting the help he needed.
‘He’s probably the person I’ve looked up to most in the last three years,’ Lloyd said.
‘He’s been really influential for me with my work at Channel 9.
‘I’m just shattered it’s got to this.’
