May 2017 Winner – MOMO Traralgon
We are pleased to advise the winner of 3AW/Momentum Energy Small Business Success Awards for May 2017 is: MOMO Traralgon.
MOMO opened its doors on the 6th of December 2014. In the near 2.5 years the café has grown beyond all expectations. They have extended the café from the initial 120 seat to a 384 capacity venue with an upstairs function room and rooftop deck, unlike any other in the region.
In addition, they have successfully given back to the community, hosting ‘A Very Special Christmas‘ to assist those in need as determined by St Vincent De Paul which involved providing 150 of the communities most in need a Traditional Christmas Lunch and gifts.
They also see their ability to offer complimentary upskilling of their staff and enrolled 12 in Certificate IV in Management and Leadership in addition to their other trainees and apprentices undertaking Certificate III in Hospitality and Certificate III in Commercial Cookery as a success.
MOMO initially opened with 15 staff; they have now grown to 42.
Sales are anticipated to achieve in excess of $2.6million in FY17. Original forecast to their bank was projected at $1.5 million.
MOMO is owned and operated by Amy Mittelmajer and her husband David.
Amy & David’s plans are to further develop the café in both staff training but also the community. They are hoping that soon they will be in a position to be able to start hosting charity nights to raise money for such causes as the Cancer Council.
In addition to this they hope to be able to further grow on hiring and upskilling those who are disadvantaged or long term unemployed. MOMO have successfully hired and maintained multiple staff members who have been out of the workforce for multiple years.
Our reason for selecting this business is a reflection of their growth in a Regional area that has faced and faces many ongoing difficulties like impacts from the closure of the Hazelewood Power Station in nearby Morwell. It is also a reflection of their healthy menu and their use of local produce/suppliers and employment growth that adds to the overall economic benefit of the region.
