Australians should be concerned about companies retaining their personal information once they are no longer customers, according to tech expert Geoff Quattromani. The discussion has arisen following the recent hack on Medibank and its subsidiary, AHM.

Geoff Quattromani told Neil Mitchell that companies frequently keep data about former customers. However, businesses such as Medicare should be transparent about how much information is being retained.

“What they actually hold about previous customers would be the question here. Is it just that they were a member, or is it actually history around their health?” he said.

Medibank has since acknowledged that personal customer data was in fact stolen during the cyber attack. This includes information such as names, addresses, and Medicare numbers.
