Melbourne cuts ties with sister city following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine

Melbourne has suspended its sister city link with Saint Petersburg.

The City of Melbourne voted unanimously in favour of the measure on Tuesday night.

Neil Mitchell said on Monday that Melbourne had to take a stand on the issue.

Vladimir Putin was born and raised in St Petersburg and worked for the local mayor before becoming Russia’s president.

Melbourne has had ties with the Russian city since 1987.
