Melbourne looks set to host the Commonwealth Games in 2026, only 20 years after last hosting the event.

The Age reveals the Victorian government has been approached by the Commonwealth Games Federation, after no other city in more than 50 Commonwealth nations was willing to host the event.

Feasibility studies for the event are underway.

CEO of the Committee for Melbourne, Martine Letts, says hosting the event would be well worth it.

“It certainly looks like a great opportunity,” she told Ross and Russel.

“We are a visitor economy.

“We’ve got some extraordinary facilities, and I don’t just mean on the sporting side but also everything else that Melbourne has to offer – events, arts and culture – all the things that we’re well known for, that we’re desperate to revive in a post-COVID situation.”
