The federal government will commit up to $5 billion towards a train to Melbourne airport.

The project is expected to cost about $10 billion, but the final figure won’t be known until the business case is completed.

Private sector input will also be considered.

Neil Mitchell asked the Prime Minister if the project would actually begin in 2020, as has been reported today.

“I’d say that’s ambitious, should be able to get it started not long after that,” Mr Turnbull said.

He also said he was confident the state government would come to the party with contributions.

“I’m sure we’ll reach an agreement, this sort of defeatism, negativity, has stopped these sort of projects going ahead in the past,” he said.

“We will own and build the rail link together as partners.”
