Melbourne man’s brave effort to help Ukrainians escape to safety
An Australian expat has bravely been driving Ukrainians to safety in Poland.
The rescue operations kicked off when Melbourne man Dan Russell helped get his partner’s family out of Ukraine.
And the calls kept coming.
Mr Russell, who now lives in Poland, spoke to Ross and Russel from Lviv in western Ukraine.
“We went to the border with a car, we drove them out and then we drove in with a vehicle,” he said.
“Then her family kept on calling, so we sort of expanded and started getting vans.
“Now we’ve got 50-seater buses currently.”
Once they’re in the country, he’s also helping find them emergency accommodation.
“I’ve got a pretty big group of mates in Poland that are hunting for homes and have hosts waiting. All of Poland have just jumped out and they’re giving up their free spaces,” he said.
