A first-time mother has been kept from seeing her premature twins for four days after their birth last week due to a shortage of hospital beds.

Sally gave birth to the twins at Sunshine Hospital last Monday, but the hospital didn’t have any beds for their care, so they were sent to Royal Women’s Hospital at Sandringham without their mother.

Sally was unable to be moved for 24 hours, so couldn’t accompany them. Once that period was over, she couldn’t get any answers.

Grandmother of the twins, Anne, says Sally didn’t get to see her babies until she was discharged from hospital on Thursday.

“They gave her no reason why, they just said hopefully the babies can come back,” she told Neil Mitchell.

“They were talking about taking the babies interstate, I was ready to go with them.”
