Melbourne could be set to snatch another major event away from Sydney, with the prestigious Australian Open golf tournament poised to move states in 2024.

The event was recently held at the Australian Golf Club in Sydney, but could head back to Melbourne where it was held in 2022.

Tony Shepherd, who has recently spend time as Chair of the GWS Giants and Venues NSW, says Victoria remains the undisputed events capital of Australia as a result.

“I think it started with Jeff Kennett and Ron Walker,” he told Heidi Murphy on 3AW Drive.

“They set out a program of having a major international event in Melbourne every month and that’s become part of the norm now.”
