Melbourne’s population is booming, and could hit nine million by 2060.

Victoria led the nation in population growth in 2016, adding 127,500 people in the year up to September 30. Victoria’s population is currently 6.1 million, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Speaking on 3AW Breakfast, Demographer Bernard Salt from KPMG said Melbourne is growing faster than it has ever grown before, and has plenty to offer newcomers.

‘We are offering jobs, we are offering a sophisticated lifestyle, we are offering quality housing, and better housing affordability than Sydney…therefore people will choose to come to Melbourne’

Mr Salt said Melbourne needs to become better organised.

‘I think we will have many CBDs…We need to decentralise jobs and have stronger suburban work places.’
