A warm and windy day has given way to extreme weather on Tuesday afternoon, with callers to 3AW reporting power outages, strong winds and large hail stones.

CitiPower also reported 81,900 customers were without power as a result of the wild weather.

Meteorologist at the Bureau of Meteorology, Michael Efron, says weather conditions helped to generate storms which have left nearly 150,000 people without power.

Melbourne Airport spokesperson Andrew Lund said he expected delays as a result of the weather to continue throughout the afternoon.
