The Australian Taxation office is cracking down on cash-only businesses in Melbourne, to make sure dodgy retailers aren’t taking advantage of their law-abiding counterparts.

Tom Wheeler, Assistant Commissioner of the ATO, told Tom Elliott the ATO was undertaking an audit blitz on neighbourhoods with high-concentrations of cash-only businesses.

“We think it’s a really important area to focus on to protect honest businesses,” he said.

“We do see that small businesses do not report all their sales and pay their staff in cash.”

He revealed Box Hill, Werribee and Glen Waverley are the focus of the ATO’s investigation.
