Melburnians will soon be able to take in an extraordinary view that hasn’t been seen in 100 years.

The deck around the dome of the Royal Exhibition Building is reopening on October 29.

The platform, which is 21 metres from the ground, underwent major restoration works between 2018 and 2020.

From 1880 until the early 1920s, the dome was a hugely popular destination.

Tickets to visit the viewing platform will cost $29 for adults and $15 for children, and that price includes museum entry.

Head of history and technology at the Royal Exhibition Building, Dr Michelle Stevenson, says it’s a bargain.

“When you visited back in the 1880s it was three pence for adults, which is the equivalent of about $60 today,” she said.

The Royal Exhibition Building dome was Melbourne’s highest landmark for about 40 years after it was built.
