About 400,000 people poured into the city last night for New Year’s celebrations, while 60,000 families were at Yarra Park for the 9.30pm fireworks.

Lord Mayor Sally Capp told Heidi Murphy if there’s one thing last night taught Melbourne City Council, it’s that we desperately need more bins.

“We are still going, we actually start the clean up before fireworks have even started,” she said.

“We’ve still got revellers in the city this morning.

“I guess one of the learnings from last night is we could certainly do with more bins, there was quite a lot of overflowing bins.”

The Lord Mayor said in 2019 she hoped to “make a significant positive impact for people experiencing homelessness in the city” and go to more live music events.
