MFB warns romantics to take care when using candles this Valentine’s Day

The MFB has issued a warning for those setting the mood with candles this Valentine’s Day.

Candle fires can result in serious burns and cause significant damage to homes.

In 2016 MFB firefighters attended on average one candle-related fire a week.

Avoid placing candles on or near flammable items such as plastic tables, clothes racks, curtains or upholstery.

The MFB urges people burning candles to ensure they are used in a well-ventilated room, on a stable, heat-resistant surface, out of reach of children and pets.

MFB Community Resilience Director Rob Purcell says, ‘Most importantly, never leave a naked flame unattended, extinguish all candles when leaving a room or before going to sleep.

‘The only concern people should have on Valentine’s Day is securing that perfect dinner reservation, not worrying about potentially burning the house down.’
