Michael O’Brien takes state government to task after premier shuts down ‘post and boast’ laws

Shadow Attorney-General & State Member for Malvern, Michael O’Brien, has taken to the state government to task after Premier Jacinta Allan shut down the idea of introducing “post and boast” laws.
The laws would aim to stop young criminals from uploading videos and photos of their crimes to social media, with the laws already in place in Queensland and being put into action in New South Wales.
“We don’t understand for the life of us why the Victorian Labor government is so low to do anything to crack down on these offenders,” Mr O’Brien told Heidi Murphy, filling in on 3AW Drive.

The state government claims the Crimes Legislation Amendment Bill carries a maximum five-year jail term and could be applied to criminals posting and boasting online.
But Heidi Murphy admitted to Mr O’Brien that she is aware of the “awful” Eastern Freeway video filmed by Richard Pusey back in 2020 being posted repeatedly on social media recently.
“I don’t know if their hands are tied, I don’t know what’s happening, but that piece of legislation is supposed to stop that,” Murphy said.
