Agriculture minister Murray Watt says it’s critical Australia keeps foot and mouth disease out of the country after the livestock disease was detected in Bali.

He told Tom Elliott it would cause chaos for the economy.

“It would shut down our export industry, of those products, overnight,” he said on 3AW Drive.

“That’s why we are taking this so seriously.”

The minister is travelling to Indonesia this week to find out more about the issue.

He said it remained a low risk.
