The hefty penalty handed to embattled NRL star Mitchell Pearce is the most ‘outrageous’ in the history of sport, says Jon Anderson.

Pearce was given an eight-match ban and fined a whopping $125,000 ($50,000 suspended) for his now infamous behaviour on Australia Day.

Ando told Ross and John the Sydney Rooster had messed up, but the penalty was far too harsh for the offence.

‘He was off his head, but he was setup ? there’s no two ways about it,’ he said.

‘I cannot get my head around it.

‘The NRL has made Mitchell Pearce a total and utter scapegoat.’
