‘Mixture of factors’ blamed for eye-watering airfares

The price of airfares has skyrocketed, with the Travel Agents Federation pointing the finger at “a mixture of factors”.

One 3AW Mornings listener said a Qantas return flight to Barcelona which cost $2200 two months ago now costs $14,000.

Another listener recently paid an eye-watering $5503 for two return fares to Bali with Jetstar.

Dean Long from the Travel Agents Federation said there are multiple factors at play.

“It’s very expensive to put fuel in planes,” he told Neil Mitchell. “But there is also just significantly less supply.”

Mr Long says there are still good deals to be had, but you’ll need to book well in advance of travel to secure one.

“With the decision of OPEC only last week to not increase supply, those record-high fuel prices are going to stay in that system and that’s really going to hold up the price of airfares across Europe and also to the US, and domestically, unfortunately.”
