The Bureau of Meteorology has warned more thunderstorms are likely to hit Melbourne today and showers will continue for much of the next week.

But meteorologist Matthew Thomas says we’re unlikely to see flash flooding like the deluge that fell in the Lilydale area last night.

“We’ve got slightly stronger winds aloft today over Melbourne so it’s likely that any thunderstorms that do develop, and there is a chance for them developing over the northern and eastern suburbs today, the likelihood is the storms will move quicker,” he said.

“While they will still have quite a bit of moisture to tap into they will not drop that all in the one location like they did yesterday.”

Storms today are likely over the central ranges and Melbourne’s east, while severe storms are likely to be confined to East Gippsland.

“The next system pushing down from the north-west on Sunday, that doesn’t quite have the same link to tropical moisture.”
