More than a dozen Victorian councils have moved to stop new developments being equipped with gas cooktops and heating as they try seek to reduce carbon emissions.

Danni Hunter, Victorian Executive Director of The Property Council of Australia, said it was proactive measure to help speed up Australia’s push to hit Net Zero.

“There is a real movement around transitioning away from using gas into electrification and using more electricity,” she said.

But Tom Elliott pointed out 80 to 85 per cent of Australia’s electricity was still generated by burning brown coal, which is worse for the environment than burning gas.

“Which is actually why we need all three levels of government on-song with this,” Danni Hunter said.
