Mother jailed for leaving toddler locked inside car on 37 degree day
A mum who left her 14-month-old son locked inside a car on a 37 degree day so she could play the pokies has been sent to prison.
Kaija Millar left son Easton in the car for almost five hours in January, 2020.
The boy was suffering a fit and frothing at the mouth when she returned.
The incident left Easton blind and with permanent brain damage.
The 34-year-old was jailed for three years on Thursday, but could be released on parole in 12 months.
Millar’s moral culpability was found to be reduced because of her post-natal depression and her low IQ.
Defence lawyers, pushing for a Community Corrections Order, say the Uber driver “wasn’t coping” with the demands of motherhood.
