Is the move towards self-service denying kids an opportunity for part-time work?

Supermarkets have cut down heavily on service staff with the implementation of self-service checkout, and now fast food chains are joining in.

Neil Mitchell heard from a listener that McDonalds is pushing its customers towards the self-serve option.

‘During the busy times of lunch and tea, they won’t be using the counter,’ Paul Marantelli said on Monday.

Neil said his first job – a paper route – was character-forming, but is concerned the trend towards cutting service staff is denying youngsters the chance to learn about what it means to work.
