Liberal MP calls out ‘disgusting’ abuse of women in public life
An outgoing Liberal MP has used her final speech to call out the horrific abuse directed at women in public life.
Speaking to Neil Mitchell the day after her valedictory speech, South Australian MP Nicolle Flint detailed some of the vile abuse that’s been hurled at her, including vulgar names and suggestions she should be physically harmed.
“Comments … saying I should be raped, that I should be grudge f***ed, that I do sexual favours for my male colleagues, that I should be killed,” she told Neil Mitchell.
“There is a HUGE problem going on here.
“It’s just disgusting.”
Ms Flint praised the Prime Minister for taking the issue “very seriously” and said the Online Safety Act, which came into force in mid-January, is an important step towards combating the problem.
But she’s “deeply disappointed” by Anthony Albanese’s response to the problem.
Ms Flint says Mr Albanese told the press gallery he would act if he was told about sexist attacks, but she’s written to him on multiple occasions asking him to make good on his promise and he’s “been silent”.
“I want him to condemn this behaviour because we need to see bipartisan condemnation of attacks on women in public life.”
